The 2022 Writing Centre volunteers

Appointments & Drop-in

We are open  [MSJ 158 & virtually] as a team from September 12th 2022 to April 6th 2023!

NEW LOCATION: St. James 158 & virtually!

While you are always welcome to drop-in, we are working in "high demand" and may not always be able to accommodate you. We strongly suggest pre-booking appointments in advance to guarantee a spot.

We offer in-person sessions (MSJ 158) Monday-Thursday. You can also choose to have your appointment conducted virtually (Zoom OR commentary on a Word Document that will be emailed back to you) Monday-Thursday.

We offer virtual appointments (Zoom OR commentary on a Word Document that will be emailed back to you) on Fridays with graduate students.

Please upload your assignment instructions when booking!

We are closed during Reading Weeks and Exam Periods. During these times, please contact Dr. Kubow (mlopatow@uwo.ca) for an appointment.

The Centre is here to support students and faculty as we learn to become more effective communicators. To help you become a better writer we offer a variety of services, including individual sessions with a writing tutor. During individual sessions, we provide feedback on:

  • Academic essays
  • Reflections and reviews
  • Oral and visual presentations
  • Academic applications (graduate school, scholarships etc.)
  • Job applications and resumes
  • Any piece of writing you need help with (except any form of take-home test or exam)

Book an Appointment

We will assist you at any stage of the writing process to support learning strategies, generating ideas, locating resources and drafting, revising and editing your own work. Please also outline your writing goals (thesis development, grammar etc.) at the time of booking.

Remember, we will not write your papers for you or serve as an editing or proofreading service. However, we will be happy to help you learn more about writing.

Our goal is to help you develop your writing skills and become an improved writer.

When booking an appointment, tutors with the indicator “English and/or French” can tutor in both languages, this includes booking an appointment to have a French language conversation to practise pronunciation!

You can book one appointment (25 minutes) or two appointments (50 minutes) per day.

Recent Review (2022):

I am very appreciative to have had the Writing Centre Coordinator's assistance when applying to graduate school. Dr. Kubow is a very kind, supportive, and approachable person. She went above and beyond to help me. She responded to my emails within 24 hours and answered all of my questions. Dr. Kubow did everything she could to give me feedback on writing drafts before deadlines, even responding after hours!

Dr. Kubow helped with editing my grammar and suggested ways to rewrite sentences. Her prompts allowed me to self-reflect on my goals, which was key to my graduate writing pieces. She commended me on my hard work and where I shined; she was rooting for my success! Overall, I was amazed and astonished by the support I received from Dr. Kubow. Her constructive feedback has allowed me to improve my writing abilities greatly. I have submitted graduate application documents that I am very proud of, all thanks to her.

After my experience, I strongly encourage all Brescia students to use the Writing Centre. It has many resources to enhance your writing and achieve your goals.

Recent Review (2020)

Maggie and all of her staff at Brescia’s Writing Centre have provided me with excellent writing support over the past year. I firmly believe their support contributed to the high level of academic success I achieved in Year 3 of my program. I was also very impressed with how well they handled their transition to an online only format which made it easy for me to use their services this semester. With their continued support I look forward to achieving similar success in Year 4.

Maggie herself was always accommodating and went above and beyond to ensure I received the help that I needed. I truly felt she was rooting for my success as a student. In addition, the writing staff has always provided me with high quality service and even coached me through some of the writing challenges I have faced.

I have used their services for everything from individual and group assignments to application essays. I found using their services for group assignments to be particularly helpful since they provide feedback as a neutral party. Group assignments can be challenging but they helped make them easier for me with their support.

I highly encourage students to go and make an appointment with the Writing Centre today! They are there to support all of us students to achieve success and reach our academic goals.

Thank you again for all that you and your staff do.

With much gratitude and appreciation,

Nicole Weber BSc Candidate | Honors Specialization in Nutrition and Dietetics Year 4
